Five years after one devastating hurricane, another has laid Puerto Rico low. The Biden administration needs to act to prevent past, and present, from becoming prologue to yet more suffering and dysfunction on the island.
The administration plans to release $1.3 billion that was meant to help Puerto Rico rebuild after Hurricane Maria in 2017, and will remove restrictions on another $4.9 billion.
In the past week alone, the Puerto Rico Seismic Network registered 43 “significant” quakes, leaving many people fearful of going home. More than 8,000 houses have been damaged.
